December 9, 2010link to news articleIn an effort to take advantage of current technology, California assessors will have new options starting next year to notify residents about their property tax assessments. The changes are meant to streamline the process -- but there are potential risks involved. Annual Assessments & Supplemental Assessments Senate Bill 1492 amends California’s Revenue and Taxation Code effective January 1, 2011 so that assessors can issue annual and/or supplemental assessment notices by email instead of regular mail. In order to receive these notices electronically, Taxpayers will have to make a written request to the assessment offices. But what about the potential problems? What if the person in charge or the real estate matters is reassigned or leaves? The assessment notice may not get reviewed and corporations and property owners could miss the 60-day window to appeal the value. For this reason, MDI recommends against signing up for assessment notification by email. Internet Postings Another potential change allows assessors to post annual assessment value notices on their websites rather than send them through the mail. This won't go into effect until the county board of supervisors adopts an applicable ordinance for this. If the annual notices are published online, it will become extremely difficult and time-consuming task for property owners who own multiple assets around the country to track all the changes. MDI, however, has the capabilities to track these changes for each of the properties in the various counties where they are located. As currently written, the law does not allow assessors to publish supplemental assessment changes to the website in lieu of sending notice to the taxpayer.

April 19, 2010DC is contemplating an overhaul of the the current appeal process which will make it tougher for owners to seek relief for erroneous assessments accompanied with high tax liabilities. It will become increasingly important for owners to work with firms like MDI, and be prudent in effectively challenging their assessments.
